The area around Schöningen was already populated in Old Stone Age. In 1995 archaeologists found the famous 300,000 year old “Schöningen spears” at the edge of the open-cast mine of Schöningen. These are the eldest conserved weapons, which were used for hunting.
The important deposite of salt was the reason for a very early colonisation around the time of the birth of Christ. Great buildings like the St. Lorenz and St. Vincent churches and the wonderful castle complex give an impression of the eventful history of Schöningen.
